First-Timer's Guide to Renting an RV

Motorhome parked in an open field at dusk

Renting an RV for the first time feels like a lot — sizes, hookups, generators, dump stations. The good news: you only need to get three decisions right, and the rest we handle at pickup.

1. Pick the smallest rig that fits

Couples are happiest in a 19–24 ft camper van or trailer: easier parking, better mileage, half the stress. Families of five or six want a Class C around 28–32 ft with a bed for everyone — nobody sleeps great on a dinette for a week.

2. Understand hookups before you camp

Full hookups mean power, water and sewer at your site. Dry camping means your batteries, tank and wits. Every Sunset Mesa rental leaves with full tanks, charged batteries and a five-minute hookup lesson — plus a printed cheat sheet in the glovebox.

3. Ask these five questions

How many miles are included? What does overage cost? Is insurance included or extra? What's the generator policy? And what happens if something breaks at 9pm? (Ours: call us, we fix it, you keep camping.) Honest answers to those five tell you everything about a rental company.

4. Budget beyond the nightly rate

Fuel for a Class C runs roughly 8–10 mpg, campgrounds $35–$75 a night, and mileage overage is usually around $0.35 a mile. Our 30-free-miles-a-night policy covers most Arizona loops — plan your route first, then do the math.

Still unsure? Message us your dates and headcount — we'll recommend two rigs and a route, free, with zero pressure.
