Five Southwest Routes Made for Motorhomes

Desert highway toward Monument Valley buttes

We've driven every mile below in our own rentals. Each loop starts and ends in Mesa, fits a long weekend or a full week, and keeps big-rig driving easy.

1. The Canyon Loop — 4 days, 780 miles

Mesa → Grand Canyon South Rim → Monument Valley → back via Flagstaff. Camp at Mather Campground (reserve early) and Goulding's in Monument Valley. Fuel in Flagstaff and Kayenta — the Kayenta–Mexican Hat stretch is long and gorgeous.

2. The Red Rock Run — 3 days, 420 miles

Mesa → Sedona → Zion → home. Two nights in Watchman Campground, one sunset at Canyon Overlook. Easy grades, big payoffs — our most-recommended first trip.

3. The Coast Escape — 5 days, 950 miles

Mesa → Joshua Tree → Santa Monica → Big Sur and back. Camp at Jumbo Rocks, then dock the rig and day-trip the coast. Book coastal sites months ahead in summer.

4. The Geyser Trek — 7 days, 1,700 miles

For long-term renters: Mesa → Moab → Yellowstone → Grand Teton. Fishing Bridge takes big rigs; reserve the moment your dates firm up. One-way drop available in Salt Lake City.

5. The Route 66 Classic — 3 days, 500 miles

Mesa → Oatman → Amboy → Santa Monica Pier. Kitschy, flat and fun — perfect for a maiden voyage with kids. End with a photo at the End of the Trail sign.
