What "30 Free Miles" Really Means

Relaxing inside a cozy camper lounge

Every Sunset Mesa rental includes 30 free miles per night — a 4-night trip banks 120 miles. But what does that actually cover, and when do you pay more?

The math of a typical trip

Mesa to the Grand Canyon South Rim is about 230 miles each way — 460 round trip. On a 5-night rental you get 150 free miles, so roughly 310 miles are overage. At our $0.35 per mile, that's about $108 on top of the nightly rate. Knowing this before you book beats discovering it at return.

Three ways to pay less

First, stay longer: miles scale with nights, so a 7-night trip earns 210 free miles. Second, camp closer: Sedona, Lost Dutchman and Usery Mountain are all under 60 miles round trip. Third, ask about unlimited-mileage weeks — on long-term rentals we often cap the overage entirely.

Why we do miles at all

Honest answer: tires, oil and engines wear by the mile, and a flat unlimited policy would push nightly rates up for everyone — including weekenders who barely drive. Per-night miles keep short trips cheap and long hauls fair.
